The only gun I shoot with an optic is my subgun. I shoot Limited Iron division in 3-gun compatition (iron sights on pistol, shotgun and rifle). Myself, I find white shoot targets to be significantly easier to shoot because they contrast better with iron sights. Of course, whatever color we use, it w...

... it is my experience that leads me to believe that however you hit a no shoot it counts unless outside the dotted line on a paper target. This is really a question of internal consistency: IPSC-style paper targets are scored as "hit" or "not hit" based on whether the bullet hole touches the oute...

By marking the hard cover you might as well give the competitor a license to spray and pray and remove any test of accuracy all together. If you are not tested and you are not challenged then how will you know what you are truly capable of? I am eager to see where I fall short so I can improve myse...

StealthyBlagga, whats wrong with a head shot in this case? Nothing - the stage designer can simply mark the shoot target with hard cover below the neck (or wherever else he wants the shooter not to shoot), and thus the shooter is obliged to make a headshot to score. If you want to force a headshot,...

Have you shot any SMG matches where the COF designer set up that shoot possibility? Some crazy subgun stage designer designed the stage below, wherein a legitimate, full-diameter hit on the S target could also result in a NS hit under the "penetrable target" principle. The shooter cannot clearly se...

. Well.......... OK, all hits count. To be more detailed... All hits from a WHOLE bullet. Bullet fragments do NOT count. A word of WARNING to stage designers... If you don't want your design GAMED, pay close attention to target placements with respect to all available (per COF) shooting positions. ...

Falling NS targets should always have to fall to count. If the adjustment screw "wriggles loose" then that's range equipment failure and is grounds for a reshoot. Its down to the match organizers/ROs to ensure the stage is built and maintained properly. While we're on the subject of poppers, guideli...

I still think to simplify things, a falling no-shoot should fall to count (but only when hit directly by a bullet), and a rigid no-shoot only just needs to be hit directly (even edge hits) by a bullet. My advice, backed by considerable experience, is to avoid non-falling no-shoot steel targets wher...

The oldest debate in Practical Shooting

The oldest debate in Practical Shooting is the extent to which our discipline is a "simulation of gunfighting" versus "a pure sport". The gunfighters argue that the competition is intended to train for and/or measure real world fighting skills - i.e. the competitors ability to deliver accurate and f...

It's a Game, folks! Yes, I totally agree - I trust I've made this abuntantly clear in the past. I don't kid myself for a minute that we are doing anything "tactical", or promoting "training for combat". My point is that the ROOTS of the practical shooting sports are in gunfighting - its these roots...

I am curious what you use to determine that a real world shoot through is a fluke. Todd: Is this a rheorical question ? Or are you trying to be funny (sorry, even after 8 years here, I still struggle with American humor sometimes) ? If you are indeed being serious, let me try to explain my reasonin...

There is a lot of diversity in other matches. IPSC: White = no shoot, brown = shoot IDPA: White or "surrender hands" painted on target = no shoot, brown or "weapon" painted on target = shoot Steel matches: who knows ! In the days before the current two-sided IPSC target (white one side for "no shoot...

OK, back to the debate at hand: By not having to compare where a round on a target came from to it's origin removes all subjectivity. No forensics needed. All shots count whereever they are. Period. Yes, I totally agree that this makes scoring easier. Let me try to explain where I am coming from. Th...

StealthyBlagga, with all due respect Ok, I think your major objective here is to be on the difficult side. With all due respect, you are wrong. I am sincerely trying to contribute to the depate. These rules DO NOT COUNT according to a few people on this board. Any person who plays with firearms with no reguards to the 4 core saftey rules in in MY opnion is a shooter that I will not be around. Allowing shoot throughs on a "good guy" target with out a penilty is a negitive. I think you may b...
